Compare/ Contrast Essay

My essay explores the differences and similarities between arranged and free choice marriages. Although many Americans and those of western society view arranged marriage as being cruel and immoral for those involved, research has shown that most arranged marriages last longer, benefit both parties involved, and are generally more successful than free-choice marriages. I also explained how big an obstacle in-laws can be in a free choice marriage, but in arranged marriages, family support from both sides already exists.  I also contrasted the divorce rates among the two marriage types and talked about how both marriage types report high levels of satisfaction, commitment, and passionate companion love.

Ted Talk: How to Spot a Liar

In her ted talk, Pamela Meyers tells the audience the signs of a liar and how to spot one easily. She explains that no one is an original liar, and although there are good and bad liars, every liar uses the same techniques. She went into a lot of detail explaining the techniques and tactics liars use in everyday scenarios. She also explained the differences between what an honest person would do in a situation as opposed to a dishonest person’s reaction. Meyers explains to the audience that lying is a cooperative act, and if someone has ever been lied to, it is only because that person chose to be lied to. Pamela encouraged the audience to seek out the truth and to tell the truth.

I personally really enjoyed listening to Meyer’s speech. When I read the title, I knew that I wouldn't regret watching. I found the topic to be extremely interesting, and I found myself wishing that I had her “powers” of knowing when someone is telling the truth. Life would be so much easier for me if I were to know if people are being truly genuine or not.
